    Status and First Results of the MAGIC Telescope

    The 17 m MAGIC Cherenkov telescope for gamma ray astronomy between 30 and 300 GeV started operations in its final configuration in October 2003 and is currently well into its calibration phase.     Calculating the distances between the elements of the non-uniform array is usually carried out through its parametric optimization using the computational algorithms. In this paper, a simplified method is introduced and tested for determining the distances between the neighboring elements of the equal-amplitude non-uniform linear array that provides a significant increase in the array directivity while preserving the array thinning. The developed method allows both choosing the element spacing on the non-uniform linear array aperture and ensuring an increase in the array directive gain without applying the computational algorithms

    The isospin violating decay f1(1285)β†’Ο€+Ο€βˆ’Ο€0f_1(1285)\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0 has been studied at VES facility. This study is based at the statistics acquired in Ο€βˆ’Be\pi^- Be interactions at 27, 36.6 and 41 GeV/c in diffractive reaction Ο€βˆ’Nβ†’(f1Ο€βˆ’)N\pi^- N \to (f_1 \pi^-) N. The f1(1285)β†’Ο€+Ο€βˆ’Ο€0f_1(1285) \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0 decay is observed.     The paper describes the main phases and features in designing a feeder for a leaky-wave antenna in the Ka-band. The problem of feeding can be effectively solved using a horn antenna SIW technology-based and single substrate-integrated with the radiating aperture of the leaky-wave antenna. Unlike most similar studies, where an aperture exciting from a closed-type structure is analyzed, in our work the open-type antenna feeder is synthesized.In the paper, we give a brief overview of the main achievements in designing traditional SIW-structures and present relations for their calculation. Basing on results of electromagnetic modeling, determine the influence of the substrate permittivity on the efficiency of SIW transmission line by the method of finite Weiland integrals. Consider the most popular types of the waveguide transitions to SIW, including micro-strip lines and grounded coplanar waveguides (GCPW). Depending on the required bandwidth and substrate dimensions specify conditions for selecting a design type of the waveguide transition.A special attention is paid to the non-standard coplanar transition with an elevated grounded surface (EGCPW), which is worth using if the substrates are thick. It was used as a basis for designing a new, more efficient EGCPW transition with the elevated grounded surface, which contains specially made slots (SEGCPW). Recommendations for its adjustment are given.The dependences of the gain on the aperture width for the H-plane SIW horn antenna, which are used to select its optimal size, are obtained basing on simulation. It was found that for matching the feeder with the leaky-wave antenna and decreasing the side lobes level, a dielectric lens with through holes worth using. Basing on the simulation of the unit cell of the lens the dependence of the effective permittivity on the diameter of the through hole is obtained. An influence of the non-uniformity degree of the lens with the holes of different diameters on the radiation efficiency of a horn antenna is determined.     The paper gives a review to analyse the outcomes achieved in the field of micro-strip directional couplers within 2010 – 2017.Considers design features of over twenty original or modified quadrature micro-strip directional couplers within ultrahigh (UHF) and super-high frequency (SHF) bands. The focus is on the ways to reduce overall dimensions of traditional loopback, printed and coupled couplers, enhance their use in several frequency bands, suppress higher order harmonics up to the sixth, provide broad-banding operation frequency to several octaves, change a type of the laterally-coupled coupler directionality from the counter-directional to the co-directional and trans-directional ones. The results obtained are achieved due to the following: the change of the quarter-wave line segments for their equivalent micro-strip β€œΠŸβ€- and β€œT”- like structures and their combinations, the quasi-fractal topological implementation of devices, the use of composite transmission lines with the properties of meta-materials, the use of defects of various shapes in the ground plane, the samples in the signal layer of metallization, the low-pass filters in combination version of high-resistance and low-resistance lines, the use of special-form coupling apertures in a multilayer response which allows to compensate for the differences in phase lengths of the segments of connected lines for the even- and odd-order modes, thereby enabling significant improvement of Β coupler characteristics.The paper briefly describes coupler topologies, equivalent circuits and device layouts. Shows amplitude-frequency and phase-frequency characteristics simulated in computer-aided design systems. Also presents measuring results of the fabricated mock-ups of micro-strip directional couplers.
